1842
A farmstead has existed on the current site since 1842, undergoing many changes in purpose and ownership in that time. The current site formed part of a larger estate owned by the Hassard Short family throughout the late 1700s until the farm was divided into 19 separate lots and sold at auction in 1913.
E-Plan Courtyard
Early-to-mid 19th-century farms were redesigned for efficiency as agriculture industrialised: livestock needed
dedicated, weatherproof accommodation and feed preparation space, and manure collection worked better in
enclosed yards than in the open field. The E-plan (a north range with two arms running south) was the most
common “model farm” layout in Lincolnshire, designed for a linear, efficient workflow. Edlington House itself
was deliberately sited well away (190m) from the working farm — likely to keep the family home clear of the
smell and noise of livestock, helped by Lincolnshire’s prevailing south-westerly winds.
Our Family
From 1942, four generations of the Cox/Bullivant family have farmed the site; and my grandfather bought the farm
from the Walter family around 1980. Since 2004 the farm was taken over by my father, James who still farms the land today.
